An Eagle Teaches Us Seven Principles of Becoming a Leader

1. Eagles fly Alone and at High Altitudes.

They don't fly with sparrows, ravens, and other small birds. Eagles fly alone because they are solitary, territorial birds of prey. They are not social birds unless they are mating or teaching fledglings to fly or hunt. Eagles fly high up in the sky, scanning for food. An eagle can spot a rabbit in an open field from nearly a mile away.

This means that you must stay away from narrow-minded people, those that bring you down. Eagle flies with Eagles. Keep good company. Negative people can affect your attitude –Negativity can severely impact an individual's perception on the achievability of personal goals. Those who lack belief in a process will often try and derail those who are showing capability of achieving greatness.

2. Eagles have an Accurate Vision.

They have the ability to focus on something as far as 5 km away. No matter the obstacles, the eagle will not move his focus from the prey until he grabs it. An eagle's vision is exceptionally sharp because each eye has two foveae - areas of acute vision

- As compared with the human eye which only has one. The cones in the eagle's foveae are very small and tightly grouped, allowing the eagle to see small details from extreme distances.

This means that you should have a vision and remain focused no matter what the obstacles and you will succeed. When you are focused, no one can stop you to achieve success. Successful people are focused on their mission. They work on their goals every single day. This helps them achieve success faster than anyone.

3. Eagles do not Eat Dead things.

They Feed only on Fresh Prey. Most eagle species prefer their food fresh and recently killed.

This means that you should not rely on your past success, keep looking for new frontiers to conquer. Leave your past where it belongs, in the past. To forget the past requires much courage and a strong mindset. You are living your today and tomorrow is not your yesterday. The future needs much more of your attention than what is dead and gone.

4. Eagles Love the Storm.

When clouds gather, the eagle gets excited, the eagle uses the storms wind to lift itself higher. Once it finds the wind of the storm, the eagle uses the raging storm to lift itself above the clouds. This gives the eagle an opportunity to glide and rest its wings. In the meantime, all the other birds hide in the branches and leaves of the tree. The storm allows the Eagle to gain entry into a space that it cannot normally reach in good weather. As a reward for this act of boldness, the Eagle is given a broader view of its surroundings. And, once above the storm, the Eagle is clear of the rough winds and its flight becomes smoother…with less effort.

This means that you should face your challenges head on knowing that these will make you emerge stronger and better than you were. We can use the storms of life to rise to greater heights. Achievers are not afraid to rise to greater heights. Achievers are not afraid of challenges, rather they relish them and use them profitably. According to Joseph M. Marshall III, “When a storm blows, you must stand firm. For it is not trying to knock you down, it is really trying to teach you to be strong.”

5. The Eagle Tests Before it Trusts

A remarkable attribute of the eagle is the fact that it does not trust until it tests. Whenever any male eagle expresses an interest in pursuing a relationship it does not easily gain the privilege of trust without being tested. The female eagle will take a twig and fly to various heights dropping the twig.  That pursuing mate must seek to catch that twig before it touches the ground. If it catches that twig repeatedly then it has earned the right to be trusted. The main reason is that eagles have a mate for life and that partner must be able to catch the most precious thing that they will share, which is a young one.

This means that it is important to test other people before you get into partnership or relationships with them. There always will be that person with ill intention. Be cautious. True friendships are worth a million but keeping them up as an expat is a challenge. That is why friendships that stand the test of time are so valuable.

6. Eagles Prepare for Training and an Eagle Train Others

They remove the feathers and soft grass in the nest so that the young ones get uncomfortable in preparation for flying and eventually flies when it becomes unbearable to stay in the nest. The male eagle is responsible for making the nest and he does so using thorns, twigs, grass and his feathers to complete the nest.

This means that you should leave your Comfort Zone, there is No Growth there. This preparation teaches us to prepare for changes. The thorns on the outside of the nest protect it from possible intruders. Henry Ford once famously said: "Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right." One of the best ways to keep your best people is provide them with the chance to keep developing their skills. This does not mean training every year for every employee. Rather, it means using training in conjunction with recognition, rewards, and new opportunities to keep your best employees in your company.

7. The Eagles Rejuvenates

When the Eagle grows old, his feathers becomes weak and cannot take him as fast and as high as it should. This makes him weak and could make him die. So he retires to a place far away in the mountains. While there, he plucks out the weak feathers on his body and breaks its beaks and claws against the rocks until he is completely bare; a very bloody and painful process. Then he stays in this hiding place until he has grown new feathers, new beaks and claws and then he comes out flying higher than before. The eagle has the longest lifespan of its species and can live up to 30 years… but to reach this age, the eagle must make a hard decision. In its 15th year its long and flexible talons can no longer grab prey which serves as food, its long and sharp beak becomes bent and its old aged and heavy wings, due to their thick feathers, stick to its chest and make it difficult to fly.

This means that we occasionally need to shed off old habit no matter how difficult, things that burden us or add no value to our lives should be let go of. Many times, in order to survive, we have to start a change process. We sometimes need to get rid of old memories, habits and other past traditions. Only freed from past burdens, can we take advantage of the present.
